It’s National Apprenticeship Week 2021 across the UK and we’re celebrating our Boden Apprentices. In today’s hot seat, we have Boden Fire & Security's Electrical Apprentices – Thomas Mansell (pictured left) and Callum Grimwade (pictured right).

How old are you? 16
What is your apprenticeship in? Electrical
What led you to this apprenticeship you’re in? – I wanted to learn a trade and after helping a family friend with some electrical work it lead me to an Electrical Apprentice. I already knew about Boden Group and was lucky enough to secure an apprenticeship here.

What is your apprenticeship in? Electrical
Where are you based? - Devon
What led you to the apprenticeship you’re in? I was interested in electrics and I wanted to learn a trade that was interesting and technical.
Apprenticeship at Boden Group
What do you do as part of your apprenticeship?Thomas: Learn, watch and get involved with all elements of electrical work. Callum: Electrical, alarm and theory work is a big part of the role.
What projects have you been working on?Thomas: Installation fire alarm works across multiple sites throughout the the south west Callum: Helping the fire and security side with ppm and reactive jobs.
Who have you been working with?Thomas: I’ve worked with lots of people within the electrical team Callum: Dom Parkin, Fire and Security Engineer, who has been great to learn from.
Has anything exciting or interesting happened since you started?Thomas: It’s all interesting as I learn more and more everyday. Callum: I’ve been travelling around and have managed to see loads of sites and meet lots of new people.
How long is your apprenticeship with Boden? 4 years, we’re both less than a year through.
What have you learnt during your apprenticeship?Thomas: Loads! I have learnt how to install conduits, terminate call points and sockets, service fire alarms and electrical circuits, fix earth faults and much more. Callum: Various aspects of electrical works, how electric works and is distributed to help power things.
What is the most challenging thing you’ve had to do?Thomas: At the start getting up early and doing timesheets but other than that I have enjoyed all other challenges. Callum: A new build project in Fremington had some challenging wiring but I’ve learnt a lot from it.
Future After Boden
What are you plans after college?Thomas: I hope to pass the course and start a career as an electrician, hopefully with Boden. Callum: Hopefully working as a Electrical Engineer at Boden.
What is your dream job?Thomas: My dream job would probably be owning my own business. Callum: Footballer but realistically – qualified Electrical Supervisor.
